Starmer in UAE - PM continues Middle East trip as UK's 'mystery man' Powell also spotted

"UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Abu Dhabi on Thursday during the British leader's Middle East visit. According to UAE media, the two leaders reviewed recent developments across the Middle East, including the implications for regional and international security, maritime routes, energy supplies, and the global economy, as well as concerns over Iranian actions in the region. Earlier, Starmer met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah. Ahead of his trip, Starmer told the media there was a 'lot of work to do' on the US-Iran ceasefire and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He did not reveal exactly what the UK might be doing on either, with Britain refusing to be part of the conflict and not involved in the ceasefire itself or the upcoming talks. Also spotted on the trip was UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell - last seen in Geneva during talks between the US, Russia and Ukraine, although his own exact involvement in those was also not clear at the time. Starmer previously told his country and the world that Iran was 'not our war' and refused to get involved - leading to condemnation from US President Donald Trump. Trump slammed his NATO allies, singling out Starmer for failing to step up during the initial attack on Iran or on reopening the Strait - and accusing the PM of only offering to send 'old, broken down' aircraft carriers only after the US had 'won'.
