Online or offline? - Dhaka students push for in-person classes as Bangladesh considers hybrid setup to curb energy crisis

"Students in Dhaka are pushing to retain in-person classes as Bangladesh's Ministry of Education issued a directive on Thursday to implement a hybrid setup to curb the energy crisis. Footage shows female students learning inside a classroom. Male students can later be seen walking around the campus and playing football. "We usually have 50-60 students in a class. Four lights and four fans are enough for these 60 students. But if we do online classes, we will have to use 60 lights and fans for 60 students," student Jannat Diyana argued. "Through this, electricity will not be consumed less, but rather more, and the pressure on electricity will increase. In that case, I think it would be better to take classes at school instead of online classes," she continued. Bangladesh, which imports around 95 percent of its oil, primarily from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, faces heightened risk as supply routes remain unstable. Shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for roughly 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas, have driven prices higher and strained imports. To manage the shortage, authorities have introduced fuel rationing, restrictions on diesel sales, and reduced working hours. The disruption follows escalating tensions after the United States and Israel launched joint military operations against Iran on February 28, intensifying pressure on global energy markets."
