"Residents of the Gaza Strip held a funeral on Thursday for Al Jazeera journalist Mohammed Wishah, who was killed in an Israeli strike yesterday. Footage shows distraught family members and colleagues paying their final farewells as mourners performed funeral prayers. Duaa, Wishah’s sister, condemned the targeting of journalists, calling for greater protection for reporters working to document events on the ground. Ismael al-Thawabteh, Director General of the Government Media Office, criticised what he described as global silence over threats and attacks against journalists. "We condemn this crime in the strongest possible terms and hold the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the ongoing assassination of Palestinian journalists and media professionals," he said. Wishah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher, was reportedly travelling to cover a humanitarian story on Wednesday when a targeted Israeli drone strike hit his vehicle, killing the 40-year-old and one other person. The Israeli army had announced that its forces targeted Muhammad Wishah, accusing him of 'working with Hamas,' and claiming that he "worked on producing drones, rockets, and combat equipment, and was involved in transporting combat equipment throughout the Gaza Strip." In response, Al Jazeera condemned the killing, calling it "a flagrant violation of international laws and norms" and part of a pattern of targeting journalists. The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas launched an attack on Israel, killing more than 1,100 people and taking over 200 hostages. Israel responded with a large-scale military campaign, resulting in 72,289 Palestinian deaths and 170,040 injuries, according to available figures. Following Israel's announcement of the second phase of Operation Gideon 2, aimed at rescuing the kidnapped soldiers and expelling Hamas from Gaza, US President Donald Trump presented his 20-point 'Peace Council' plan, which was accepted by both Hamas and Israel. The plan was widely welcomed by several Arab and international countries as a preliminary framework for ending the conflict in the Gaza Strip."
