Security beefed up ahead of US-Iran talks in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Law enforcement agencies (LEAs) on Thursday put in place extraordinary security and traffic arrangements across the capital city to ensure security for peace talks between Iran and the United States (US) scheduled to begin on Friday (today). As part of the comprehensive security plan, the Red Zone — which houses the Diplomatic Enclave, Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Parliament House, the Supreme Court, and other key government offices—has been completely sealed, with a heavy deployment of security personnel including all LEAs and security forces. Police contingents have been stationed on all routes leading to the Red Zone and in various parts of the city. Specialized units, including Islamabad Police commandos, female officers, mobile patrol teams, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), and the Bomb Disposal Squads (BDS), were also deployed at multiple locations. A hotel in the Red Zone has been reserved exclusively for the delegations and vacated on government directions, with strict security arrangements in place in an aground the hotel. As a part of security measure capital police have also intensified search operations and intelligence-based surveillance across Islamabad. Security has been further tightened at bus terminals, as well as in slums and green areas near the high-security zone. The capital police conducted large-scale joint grand combing and search operations in various areas of the federal capital against criminal elements. Search operations were conducted in the jurisdictions of Police Stations Humak, Sumbal, Shehzad Town, Sabzi Mandi, Karachi Company, and Tarnol. The operations were carried out under the supervision of zonal Superintendents of Police (SPs), with participation from female police personnel as well. During the operations, a total of 663 individuals and 348 households were checked. Additionally, 38 shops and 59 hotels were inspected, while 215 motorcycles and 61 vehicles were examined. The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) devised a special traffic plan for April 9 an April 10, under which all heavy traffic have been banned from entering Islamabad for two days. Under the traffic plan, the Expressway from Zero Point to Korral Chowk will remain closed from both sides, while diversions will also be placed on the Islamabad Express Highway because of the movement of foreign delegations. Commuters travelling from Peshawar to Rawalpindi via GT Road have been advised to use the Taxila Motorway, Chakri, Chak Beli Road and Rawat routes. Similarly, those travelling from Lahore to Peshawar have been directed to use Rawat, Chak Beli Road and the Taxila Motorway. Traffic police also advised people travelling from Margalla Road to Rawalpindi to use the Ninth Avenue, while traffic heading from Faisal Avenue to Zero Point will also be diverted towards the Ninth Avenue. For commuters travelling from Bhara Kahu to Rawalpindi, the designated alternative routes are Korang Road, Bani Gala and Lehtrar Road. Those coming from Rawalpindi to Islamabad have been instructed to use Murree Road via the Ninth Avenue. According to notification issued by district administration , Trail 2, 3 ,4, 5 and the trail behind the Saidpur village shall remain closed for public on April 9 and 10.
