Battle for the heart of Iran - From the Shah to the Islamic Republic *ARCHIVE*

"The story of the 1979 Iranian Revolution is told through rare archive footage from before, during and after the uprising and the start of the Islamic Republic. Video from the mid-1950s, '60s, and late 1970s shows the former Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi with his family members; footage also includes staff at industrial enterprises including oil-producing facilities and worshippers praying. Protests erupted in October 1977 and intensified into mass civil resistance against the US-backed Shah, with opposition including communists, socialists and Islamists. The video then shows thousands of protesters marching, chanting anti-government slogans and holding photos of religious leaders, including Ruhollah Khomeini - later the Supreme Leader. Law enforcement are shown cracking down on the protests and deploying tear gas. People are seen carrying injured demonstrators, while the bodies of those killed are seen piled up on the ground. Up to 3,000 people were reported killed in the demonstrations, although some estimates have it far higher, in the tens of thousands. Pahlavi fled Iran in January 1979. Following the March 1979 referendum, which voted overwhelmingly in favour of an Islamic Republic, Khomeini became the supreme leader that December."
