'They insulted me...but my heart is full of strength and gratitude!' - Fujimori holds final rally in Lima ahead of presidential elex

"Keiko Fujimori, the Fuerza Popular presidential candidate, held her final campaign rally in Lima on Thursday, ahead of the country's April 12 national elections. Footage shows supporters of the candidate and Fuerza Popular arriving at the rally and entering the venue before Fujimori took to the stage for a lively appearance. She was later showered in confetti as she waved to followers after her speech. "They insulted me: 'Lazy Keiko, bad daughter Keiko.' And they even said: 'Keiko has no heart.' Imagine that. I tell you that my heart is full of strength and gratitude," Fujimori slammed critics targeting her. The former First Lady of Peru also blasted policies made by 'the left', which she claimed 'distributes poverty while we generate wealth'. "Today the population does not trust its politicians, and they are absolutely right, because in recent years they promised gas at 12 soles ($3.5 - €3). Did they deliver? They destroyed security when they opened the borders," she underlined. Fujimori has run for president on three previous occasions, reaching the second round each time, making her one of the country's most recognised political figures. According to local polls ahead of the vote, Fujimori and Pais para Todos party's Carlos Alvarez occupy first and second place respectively, which would set up a potential runoff on June 7. The 2026 election will be held for the first time under Peru's new bicameral system since it was abolished in 1993, with voters electing 130 deputies and 60 senators alongside the president and vice presidents."
