The visit marked the first time in nearly a decade that a Kuomintang chair has led a delegation to mainland China as tensions remain high across the Taiwan Strait. China has increased military pressure in recent years, including drills and patrols around the island, while Taipei has strengthened ties with Western partners, particularly the United States. Beijing views Taiwan as part of its territory under the 'One China' principle, while the island has never officially declared independence."
