Final farewell - Hundreds of mourners attend Kharrazi's funeral at Imam Khomeini Shrine in Tehran

"Hundreds of people attended the funeral of Foreign Relations Strategic Council chief Kamal Kharrazi at the Imam Khomeini Shrine in Tehran on Friday, following the announcement of his death from injuries sustained in an airstrike. Footage shows attendees performing Friday prayers before Kharrazi's coffin was carried amid chants against the US and Israel. Iranian media reported on Thursday that Kharrazi had died after "succumbing to wounds sustained in US and Israeli airstrikes on April 1." The US and Israel have not released any statement on the Iranian leader's death at the time of publication. Kharrazi, aged 81, was one of Iran's most prominent diplomats, having served as Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations in New York and as foreign minister between 1997 and 2005 during the presidency of Mohammad Khatami. The United States and Iran reached a conditional two-week ceasefire agreement early Wednesday, just ahead of the deadline set by US President Donald Trump to reach a deal and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iran’s armed forces would halt 'defensive operations' if attacks on the country stop. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that Iranian and US delegations are expected to meet in Islamabad on Friday, April 10, to continue negotiations aimed at reaching a final agreement to 'resolve all differences.' Tensions in the Middle East have escalated following joint military operations carried out by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28. Tehran responded by launching strikes targeting Israel and US military sites in the region, with reports of explosions in several Gulf countries."
