North Arabian Sea: Pak Navy evacuates 18 merchant ship crew

KARACHI: Pakistan Navy on Friday conducted a successful search and rescue operation in the North Arabian Sea, evacuating 18 crew members of a distressed merchant vessel, including foreign nationals, officials said. According to a Pakistan Navy statement, the operation was launched after a distress call was received from Merchant Vessel GOLD AUTUMN, which was operating approximately 200 nautical miles (around 370 kilometres) off Pakistan’s coast. Upon receiving the alert, the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency activated its Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) and initiated an immediate response. Pakistan Navy Ship HUNAIN, already on patrol in the area, was tasked to assist the distressed vessel. “PNS HUNAIN actively undertook the search and rescue operation demonstrating professionalism and operational expertise,” the Pakistan Navy said in its statement. The naval team, comprising technical specialists, provided medical assistance to the crew, supported fire fighting efforts onboard the vessel, and conducted a detailed damage assessment before carrying out the evacuation. The rescued crew included nationals from China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Indonesia. All 18 individuals were safely transported to Karachi for further medical care and subsequent repatriation to their respective countries. The Navy termed the operation a reflection of its humanitarian commitment, stating that assistance rendered at extended ranges underscores its resolve to act as a first responder in maritime emergencies within its area of responsibility. “Humanitarian assistance rendered by Pakistan Navy at extended ranges off Pakistan’s coast reflects its continued resolve and commitment for always being the first responder to maritime crisis situations,” the statement added.
