"A silent march honouring young victims of the Gaza war was held in Rome on Friday, with protesters carrying a shroud bearing the names of more than 18,000 children killed in the conflict. Footage shows demonstrators hoisting a banner with the slogan 'Don't forget a single name', before carrying Palestinian flags and the giant shroud, marching and singing during the procession. "This shroud bears the 18,547 names of children killed in Gaza by Israeli weapons between October 2023 and May 2025," an activist explained. "It is the shroud that cries out, of life and struggle. And we want to listen to it, so we will be silent and accompany it." Italian journalist Paola Caridi also joined the procession, stressing, "there is a section of Italy – and I believe it is the majority – that says genocide cannot be carried out, and if those in power do nothing, those without power use words [...] to denounce that genocide must not be carried out." The procession reportedly began at Piazza Vittorio and ended at the Verano cemetery, where demonstrators read out the names and ages of the deceased minors in their memory. The Israel-Hamas war erupted on October 7, 2023, following Hamas attacks that killed 1,139 people, largely Israeli civilians, and captured over 200 hostages. Israel's subsequent military campaign in Gaza has killed at least 72,302 people and injured 172,090, at the time of publication. Last January, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff announced the start of the second phase of the 20-point 'Trump Plan' aimed at ending the Gaza conflict, which moving from ceasefire to disarmament, establishing a technocratic administration, and beginning reconstruction efforts."
