Oil you need with one click! Bangladesh launches smart fuel app to address energy crisis

"Bangladesh's Jhenaidah administration has launched a tech-based solution to tackle the fuel crisis through the Smart Fuel app, developed by entrepreneur Obaidul Haque Russell. Footage filmed on Saturday shows locals queuing at petrol stations, motorcycles being fueled, and users operating the Smart Fuel application, where they are seen scanning their motorcycles through the app. "The biggest advantage of getting oil through fuel apps is that we no longer have to stand in long queues like before. When the oil crisis first started, there were very long queues at the oil pumps," Dipankar Kumar, a resident, said. "Now, the advantage of getting oil through fuel apps is that once a person buys oil, they will not be able to buy oil again for four days. Enough oil is being provided for four days," he added. Vehicles registered on the app can refuel only once every 94 hours, aiming to ensure transparency and curb the black market supply. Bangladesh, which imports around 95 per cent of its oil, primarily from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, faces heightened risk as supply routes remain unstable. Shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for roughly 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas, have driven prices higher and strained imports. To manage the shortage, authorities have introduced fuel rationing, restrictions on diesel sales, and reduced working hours. The disruption follows escalating tensions after the United States and Israel launched joint military operations against Iran on February 28, intensifying pressure on global energy markets."
