From oven to frontline - Bakers with Russia’s Western Group of Forces bake traditional Easter bread for troops in Ukraine conflict zone

"Bakers with Russia's Western Group of Forces made fresh kulichi, a traditional sweet bread with succades and egg-white frosting, for soldiers on the frontlines in the Ukraine conflict zone, as Orthodox Christians around the world prepare to celebrate Easter. Footage released by the Russian Defence Ministry on Saturday shows a serviceman, known as 'Sukhar', preparing dough and decorating Easter bread with frosting and sprinkles. The military department reported that the 1st Tank Regiment's field bakery has already baked more than 350 kulichi. The baked goods are blessed before being sent to the trenches, dugouts, and observation posts. Orthodox Christians observe Easter on the first Sunday following the full moon after the spring equinox, in accordance with the Julian calendar. Easter Sunday, which marks the Resurrection of Christ, is one of the oldest and most revered celebrations within the Church, following seven weeks of Lent focused on reflection and abstinence. Services and religious processions will take place in churches across Russia on Orthodox Easter Day, April 12. Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO. Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow. The date and location of the footage published by the Russian Defence Ministry cannot be independently verified."
