‘Prepared for any scenario’ - Iran’s Deputy FM says Tehran ready for defence or dialogue, has ‘superior hand’ after US ‘major defeats’

"Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi claimed that Iran has a ‘superior hand’ in ongoing talks with the US, speaking from the venue for the negotiations mediated by Pakistan in Islamabad on Saturday. Speaking to reporters, Gharibabadi said Iran is ‘prepared for any scenario’, whether military or diplomatic. He explained that the talks featured "a new agenda and a new set of claims by Iran, ranging from the issue of war to other betrayals that have been committed against society and the Iranian nation by the US." "We hope, God willing, that with the seriousness present in the Iranian delegation, and with the upper hand that has been achieved in military terms through the unity and national cohesion forged in the current war, we will reach the desired results," he continued. Gharibabadi underlined that Tehran remains ‘fully serious’ about “defending the country, in military and defensive terms”, and also ‘equally serious’ with regard to engaging in ‘negotiation and dialogue’. He noted that the current Iranian delegation demonstrates a higher level of ‘readiness’. "We have had good capacities in all rounds, in past eras, but this time, due to the good victories we achieved in the war and national unity, we are present in negotiations and talks with a superior hand," he noted. Islamabad is hosting the Iran-US negotiations on Saturday with Pakistani mediation. The Iranian delegation comprises Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Araghchi. The US delegation is headed by Vice President JD Vance and includes presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff. The United States and Iran have reportedly reached a conditional two-week ceasefire agreement, ahead of a deadline set by US President Donald Trump for a broader understanding that includes the reopening of a strategic strait. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iran's armed forces will halt 'defensive operations' if attacks on the country cease. "
