Typhoon ‘Sinlaku’ remains likely to enter PAR next week

MANILA, Philippines – The state-run weather agency said Sunday that Typhoon “Sinlaku” (international name) may still enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) late next week. Weather specialist Veronica Torres of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in a 5 a.m. briefing that Sinlaku, located about 2,745 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao and still outside PAR, has no direct impact on the country so far. “Once it enters PAR, the typhoon will be given the local name ‘Caloy,’” Torres said. The Pagasa forecaster added that while intensification into a strong typhoon remains possible, the likelihood of landfall is currently low. In the meantime, Pagasa said the easterlies and the ridge, or extension, of a high-pressure area (HPA)—the opposite of a low-pressure area—will continue to affect most parts of the archipelago. According to the agency, easterlies are warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean that bring humid conditions and localized rain. The ridge of an HPA, meanwhile, is an anti-cyclonic system typically associated with hot weather. “The country can expect hot and humid conditions in the coming days, with possible localized downpours or thunderstorms in the late afternoon or at night,” Torres said.
