Typhoon Sinlaku still likely to enter PAR this week —Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines – The state-run weather agency said on Sunday that Typhoon Sinlaku (international name) still has the possibility of entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) late next week. Weather specialist Veronica Torres of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said, however, in a 5 a.m. briefing, that Sinlaku, which was 2,745 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao while lingering outside PAR, has no direct impact on the country yet. “Once it enters PAR, a domestic name ‘Caloy’ has been assigned for the typhoon,” Torres said.’ The Pagasa forecaster noted that while intensification into a strong typhoon is not ruled out, the chance of a landfall scenario remains low. In the meantime, Pagasa said the easterlies and the ridge or extension of the high pressure area (HPA) – the opposite of the low pressure area (LPA) – would remain the dominant weather systems affecting most parts of the archipelago. According to the national weather bureau, the easterlies refer to warm winds that pass through the Pacific Ocean that carry humid temperatures and localized rain, while the ridge of HPA is an anti-cyclonic system associated with hot weather. “The country could expect hot and humid weather in the coming days, while localized downpours or thunderstorms would be possible during late afternoon or at night,” Torres said.
