'This is an election milestone' - Peru distributes electoral materials across Lima under tight security ahead of Sunday polls

"The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) launched the distribution of electoral materials to polling locations in Metropolitan Lima and the Constitutional Province of Callao on Friday, ahead of the General Elections on Sunday. Footage recorded in Lima shows the arrival of lorries loaded with electoral materials, while patrols and police officers guarded the area. ONPE officials were present at the site to present the resources that will be available to members of the polling stations. "The magnitude of this operation is almost double the magnitude we had five years ago. Tonight, between 22:00 at night and 06:00, we are going to deploy 336 lorries," reported Piero Corvetto, Head of ONPE. He detailed that the materials will be distributed to 2,200 polling locations in Lima and Callao, where a security operation was deployed to guard the arrival of the lorries. "This is a milestone in the election. This is a very important moment. And it shows, with the presence and oversight of the National Jury of Elections and of national and international observers, how we are complying gradually and progressively according to the established schedule," he added. He further called on citizens to vote and to do so mindfully. "I call on the responsibility of voters so that they can go to the polls properly informed by the electoral bodies," he urged. The electoral materials consist of voting booths, ballots, signage, labels, among other elements. The transfer was protected by the National Police and the Armed Forces to guarantee security during the process. According to authorities, more than 27 million Peruvians will be able to vote to elect the President of the Republic, two vice presidents, 60 senators, 130 deputies, as well as five representatives to the Andean Parliament. In the case of the presidency, if no candidate obtains more than 50% of the vote, a second round will be called to be held on June 7 between the two candidates with the highest number of votes."
