'Three million votes or hell' - Orban vows peace and sovereignty in final push ahead of Hungary's election showdown

"Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban framed Sunday's election as a defining battle for national sovereignty, warning of foreign interference and vowing to keep Hungary out of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in a final campaign address in Budapest a day before the vote. "We will not give our children to Ukraine, we will not give our money, and we will not give our weapons," Orban proclaimed. "Hungary will remain an island of peace and will continue to be the safest country in Europe after the elections." "We will break Zelensky's oil blockade against Hungary. We will not support any decision anywhere in global politics that benefits Ukraine, as long as they do not return what belongs to us," Orban persisted, arguing that supporting Kiev and following EU decisions runs against Budapest's national interests. The Hungarian leader further asserted that his government demonstrated an alternative political path in Europe, particularly on migration, sovereignty and the situation in Ukraine. "We are the ones [...] who have shown that a migrant invasion can be stopped. The borders of a nation can be defended," he stated, stressing, "You can defend your homeland." Orban pointed to US backing as crucial amid the foreign influence. "It was very important in this campaign that the Americans made it clear that Hungary is part of the West, because we are their friends. All the nonsense about friendship with the Russians was swept aside by the Americans in one move," he said. Orban concluded his remarks by urging strong voter turnout, presenting the election as decisive for Hungary's political direction in the coming years. "If we achieve three million votes, then even the gates of hell will not be able to prevail against us over the next four years." The campaign comes amid heightened political tensions in Hungary ahead of Sunday's vote, with Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz facing a challenge from Peter Magyar's Tisza movement in a race increasingly shaped by allegations of foreign interference. Orban's government accused the EU and Ukraine of attempting to influence the outcome in favour of a more pro-Brussels leadership, amid disputes over energy security, sanctions and military aid. Budapest and Bratislava also clashed with Kiev over disruptions to Russian oil flows via the Druzhba pipeline."
