"Peru continued its deployment of more than 100,000 security personnel on Saturday, to ensure safety during the election day on Sunday. Around 45,000 soldiers and 61,000 police officers will be on duty, with over 10,000 patrols throughout the national territory to safeguard the more than 10 thousand polling stations enabled for the general elections, the Peruvian government reported. Footage from the Peruvian city of Tacna show military personnel gathered, carrying their weapons and boarding lorries to head out to polling stations. The deployment is part of the 'General Elections and Second Election 2026' operational plan, presented by the president of the Council of Ministers, Luis Enrique Arroyo Sanchez, who stressed that the personnel are deployed to ensure the "protection of voting materials with neutrality and transparency." He also stated that the government of President Jose Maria Balcazar maintains an "unwavering commitment" to public security, as well as to the "democratic transition", and therefore aims to "guarantee a transparent electoral process". In Sunday’s elections, around 26 million Peruvian citizens will vote within the national territory, while another 1.2 million are expected to do so abroad, according to the National Jury of Elections of Peru. During the day, citizens will be able to vote to elect the president of the Republic, two vice presidents, 60 senators, 130 deputies, as well as five representatives to the Andean Parliament. For the position of president of the Republic, if no candidate obtains more than 50% of the vote, a runoff will be called to take place on June 7 between the two candidates with the highest number of votes."
