Holy glow - Thousands of traditional lanterns bright up Santorini's Pyrgos for Easter

"Thousands of traditional lanterns lit up the village of Pyrgos, also known as Santorini's Hidden Gem, in a unique celebration of Easter. Footage filmed on Friday night shows a sea of light illuminating the mediaeval white buildings of the hilltop village, as numerous lanterns made from tin cans filled with sand, oil, paraffin, or sawdust are lit. As the celebration reached its peak, a solemn procession made its way through the streets, carrying on their shoulders the Epitaphios, a flower-decked bier that represented Jesus Christ's tomb. Easter, which marks the Resurrection of Christ, is one of the oldest and most revered celebrations within the Church, following seven weeks of Lent focused on reflection and abstinence. The Eastern Orthodox Church, which prevails in Greece, observes Easter in accordance with the Julian calendar, with Easter Sunday falling on April 12 this year."
