'Entrenched corruption!' - VP candidate Norma Yarrow slams delayed polling station openings in Lima

"Norma Yarrow, vice-presidential candidate and running mate of Rafael Lopez Aliaga of the Popular Renewal party, criticised Peru's National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) on Sunday over delays in the opening of polling stations on election day. "Older people have been the first ones who want to go vote in this sun without sitting down. How much longer can they hold out?" Yarrow exclaimed. "They talk to me about San Borja in Villa. I just came from Villa Maria del Triunfo. We have been in San Juan de Miraflores and there are no polling stations," she added. She also said a similar situation occurred during the 2021 elections, when polling was delayed by four hours, leaving citizens unable to vote until around 11:00 in the morning. "I am outraged that the polling stations are not opening, outraged because I know that my street poll shows us winning in the first round," Yarrow said. "Corruption has become entrenched. We want to heal a wonderful country like this one. No matter who falls, it has to be denounced," she stressed. According to ONPE, around 27 million citizens are expected to cast their ballots on Sunday, with voting mandatory for those aged 18 to 70. Voters will select the country's next president and two vice presidents, as well as 15 members of the Andean Parliament and 195 national representatives, including 60 senators and 130 deputies. Recent polls show that no candidate exceeds 50% support, pointing to a fragmented race that will likely be decided in a second-round runoff between the top two candidates. If required, the runoff will take place weeks later, with the winner set to take office on June 7. Over the past decade, the nation has had at least eight presidents - ranging from elected leaders to interim appointments - amid a turbulent cycle of political upheaval, impeachments and widespread protests."
