Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project: Diplomatic engagement rekindles hopes: BP

LAHORE: Recent diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States has rekindled hopes for the long-stalled Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project, which Pakistan’s business community considers vital for the country’s energy future. The Businessmen Panel of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry has welcomed this development. Its chairman, Mian Anjum Nisar, urged the government to act decisively, describing the pipeline as an economic necessity rather than merely an option. Nisar stressed that Pakistan’s energy crisis has become unsustainable, with billions of dollars spent annually on imported liquefied natural gas and petroleum products, straining foreign exchange reserves and raising business costs. He argued that the pipeline offers a reliable, cost-effective alternative through a direct land route, shielding Pakistan from maritime disruptions and global supply shocks. Although Iran completed its portion of the pipeline following agreements signed in 2009, Pakistan has yet to begin construction on its side. Nisar acknowledged financing and regulatory challenges but maintained they are manageable with political will. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
