Delays and fallout - Peru electoral body acknowledges 30% of polling stations non-functional, warns of legal action

"Peru's presidential elections were marked this Sunday by a series of technical failures at polling centres across the country, which forced electoral authorities to extend voting hours in several regions and to announce legal action will be taken against those responsible. At a press conference, the president of the National Jury of Elections [JNE], Roberto Burneo Bermejo, reported that he is continuously monitoring the situation and that, so far, 30% of polling stations are not properly functioning. "At present there is an average of 30% of polling stations not installed nationwide," Burneo Bermejo declared. The official also called for calm among the population, stressing that there are protocols in place, but adding that complaints will be filed against administrative authorities to clarify the delay in the electoral process. "We are going to report all the authorities and those responsible who may be involved, all of them will be reported," said the president. Meanwhile, the National Office of Electoral Processes [ONPE] confirmed via social media that the incidents were related to "intermittent connectivity and errors in device synchronisation", although it assured that the integrity of the electoral process was not compromised."
