Adola crossed the finish line first in 2:03:54, as Shimeles smashed the women's course record with 2:18:56. Ethiopia also took second place in both races, with Tesfaye Deriba finishing behind Adola in the men's event and Aminet Ahmed trailing two-and-a-half minutes behind Shimeles in the women's race. Tens of thousands of runners from around the world took part in the 45th edition of the marathon, which is considered one of the most important events in the World Athletics calendar.
