"Thousands of children's shoes and toys were placed across Dam Square in Amsterdam on Sunday in a symbolic tribute to young lives lost in Gaza in Israeli attacks. Footage shows organisers reading out the names of the Gaza children killed. Citizens can also be seen surrounding the memorial site. The sixteenth memorial protest was organised by the Plant an Olive Tree group for child victims in Gaza. Esther van der Most, one of the organisers, said the protest aimed to raise awareness among the Dutch public of the human cost of Israel's attacks on Gaza. "We need to make this end as humans, because when we accept genocide and the killing of people, we lose everything, we lose humanity," she said. The display aimed to highlight the human cost of the conflict, with organisers calling on the public to remember the victims and raise awareness of the impact on children. People attending the protest expressed concerns about children being killed in Lebanon and Iran due to Israel's military operations in both countries. "It is a very moving and touching way to show us that it's really children who were killed," said a protester. "It makes me really sad and angry, because of all this injustice, because the people who are responsible for this are still not in the International Criminal Court," said another rally aprticipant. "It's a crime, it's genocide, and it has to stop really soon." According to data shared by UNICEF in February 2026, at least 21,289 children have been killed in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, and 44,500 injured, with 11,000 sustaining life-changing injuries. At least 138 children have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the US-brokered ceasefire in October 2025."
