Polling overtime - Vote count begins in Peru after delays and election-day disruptions

"Polling stations in Peru closed at around 18:00 local time on Sunday, after voting hours were extended in the presidential election, with vote counting getting underway following an election day marked by operational incidents. The count is overseen by Peru's electoral authorities. Ballots are being counted manually at polling stations, while preliminary results are also being transmitted, in a process that will determine whether any candidate secures an outright majority or whether a runoff will be required. Footage filmed on Sunday shows residents going to polling stations while staff sort and count ballot papers. Some polling stations opened late during the day, prompting authorities to extend voting hours to give people more time to cast their ballots. Yessica Clavijo, secretary-general of Peru's National Jury of Elections, told a press conference that authorities were considering extending voting until 18:00 on Monday at polling stations where people had been unable to cast their ballots earlier in the day. In total, 35 candidates are competing for the presidency. If no candidate secures more than 50 per cent of the vote in the first round, a runoff will be held on June 7. Among the leading candidates is Fuerza Popular party leader Keiko Fujimori, who is currently ahead in the polls, followed by Civic Works' Ricardo Belmont."
