'Not even Maduro at his worst did this' - Pres candidate Aliaga demands vote extension, electoral chief's arrest over 'unprecedented fraud' in Peru

"Popular Renewal party presidential candidate Rafael Lopez Aliaga accused Peru's electoral authorities of committing 'electoral fraud' on Sunday, citing logistical failures and electronic breakdowns during the vote. I would say this is a case of electoral fraud unlike anything seen in the world. Not even Maduro at his worst did this in Venezuela. Not even a narco-dictatorship has done this. Mr Corvetto has done it," the candidate said. Lopez Aliaga directly accused Piero Corvetto, head of the National Office of Electoral Processes of Peru, stating that the incidents on election day not only represent operational failures but constitute a very serious offence. "Mr Corvetto should resign immediately and be prosecuted. We have called for his arrest as he is still in a state of flagrante delicto. It is an extremely serious crime, one of the worst offences that exist in a democratic system. Acting against the will of the people," the politician proclaimed. Lopez Aliaga called for voting hours to be extended until the following day, to allow voters who were unable to cast their ballot due to logistical failures to do so. He explained this would help correct poor management by the National Office of Electoral Processes and guarantee the Peruvian people their right to vote. ONPE head Piero Corvetto issued a public apology, stating, "Regarding my remaining in office, I submit myself to any and all investigations that may be initiated, in whatever forum they may arise." Electoral authorities announced that 63,300 Lima residents, along with Peruvians registered to vote in Orlando and Paterson, New Jersey, would be allowed to cast ballots on Monday after logistical failures left thousands unable to vote the day before."
