"The presidential candidate for the Popular Renewal party, Rafael Lopez Aliaga, affectionately known as 'Porky', spoke this Sunday about the failures recorded during Peru's general elections, following reports of disruptions in the installation of polling stations and electronic deficiencies in the process. Voting was initially extended for an hour, before the announcement that 63,000 impacted voters in Lima would be granted an extension to Monday, delaying the election outcome. At a press conference from his campaign headquarters, the candidate directly accused the representative of the ONPE [National Office of Electoral Processes of Peru], Piero Corvetto Salinas, of failing his own operational plan for the proper execution of the elections, which, according to the candidate, left much to be desired. "Mr Corvetto had responsibility until the 11th, according to his own operational plan, to have all the material ready. It was not today that it should have been delivered to polling stations," Lopez Aliaga said, describing the official’s performance in delivering the polls as akin to that of a ‘banana republic’. “It leaves us in a very bad position,” he went on. “I am now receiving international calls from the Secretary of State asking what is happening in Peru!” According to Aliaga, delays in the distribution of materials and the failure to install polling stations on time may have resulted in a significant number of citizens being unable to vote within the scheduled timeframe. He further called on electoral authorities to take immediate corrective measures to guarantee the right to vote. "It cannot be that 13% of polling stations in Lima did not open at the appropriate time. It is an insult. People want to vote, they want to exercise their civic right," he continued. “It is one million, one million people who have not voted according to the figures provided by ONPE itself.” The election was hit by a number of logistical incidents. A portion of polling stations failed to be installed on time due to delays in the distribution of materials, and electronic failures were recorded in electoral registers, causing further delays."
