'It is about the right to vote!' - Presidential candidate Fujimori demands extended hours at polls as failures hit Peru election

"Presidential candidate of the People's Force party Keiko Fujimori expressed her 'deep concern' on Sunday over technological incidents recorded on election day in Peru that prevented thousands of voters from casting their ballots. "We deeply regret that there are 211 polling stations, tables, sorry, 15 polling centres representing 63,000 voters who have not been able to exercise their vote today," the candidate stated. It comes after the president of the National Jury of Elections (JNE) reported that 30 percent of polling stations were not installed due to technical problems related to connectivity and device synchronisation. In response, the candidate urged the JNE and ONPE (National Office of Electoral Processes) to implement immediate corrective measures, such as extending voting hours 'until late at night' if necessary or holding a complementary voting day for affected voters. "Logistical failures due to a lack of materials, delays, and polling centres that did not open must not affect citizens' right to vote. And I disagree when it is said, 'Well, they will be allowed not to pay their fine.' This is not about a fine; it is about the right to go and vote," Fujimori asserted, questioning the measures announced by the JNE to legally punish those involved or responsible for the failures during the electoral day. So far, electoral authorities have not announced an extraordinary extension of voting hours nor a general complementary vote. The situation remains under evaluation as the electoral process continues."
