'I submit myself to any and all investigations' - Peru election chief apologises after logistical failures leave thousands unable to vote

"The head of Peru’s National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), Piero Corvetto, apologised in a statement to the media from Lima on Sunday, after logistical failures disrupted voting during the country’s general election, leaving tens of thousands of citizens unable to cast their ballots. The authorities acknowledged that delays in the delivery of electoral materials prevented the proper setup of voting stations, particularly in parts of Lima. According to official data, at least 63,000 voters were affected by the disruptions. "Regarding my remaining in office, I submit myself to any and all investigations that may be initiated, in whatever forum they may arise," said Corvetto. Long queues formed at multiple polling centres as voters waited for hours amid delays, with some sites opening late or lacking the necessary materials to begin voting on time. Corvetto said electoral materials had been deployed nationwide by air, river and land, but admitted that distribution issues in the capital led to significant setbacks. He added that efforts continued throughout the night and morning to resolve the situation. Several candidates, including the leader of the Fuerza Popular Party, Keiko Fujimori, called on electoral authorities to extend voting hours or even hold a complementary voting day to ensure that those affected by the disruptions are able to exercise their right to vote."
