Eastward bound - Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince touches down in Beijing to forge 'new era' of UAE-China strategic ties as Middle East tensions continue

"Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, touched down in Beijing to begin an official 2-day visit aimed at ‘further strengthening bilateral ties and advancing cooperation across key priority sectors,’ according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM). Footage shows the Crown Prince alighting from his plane in Beijing and shaking hands with the Chinese delegation. The agency noted that the visit "underscores the shared commitment of the United Arab Emirates and China to deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership and unlocking new opportunities for development and economic cooperation. It also reflects a joint focus on expanding investment in high-potential sectors, in line with evolving regional and global market dynamics." "It also reinforces the UAE as a leading global trade hub, a key investment gateway, and a strategic partner in driving sustainable economic growth," the agency continued, adding that the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi was accompanied by a number of senior Emirati officials. A 2025 press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed that Beijing will host the second China-Arab States Summit this year, with a primary objective of finalising negotiations for a China-GCC Free Trade Agreement. Amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, both the UAE and China have positioned themselves as influential diplomatic and economic players. The UAE has increasingly played a mediating role, leveraging its regional ties and pragmatic foreign policy, while China has expanded its presence through economic partnerships and calls for de-escalation, with Special Envoy Zhai Jun making multiple visits to Abu Dhabi and other regional capitals throughout March and April to promote a ceasefire."
