'It's time the Irish make a stand' - At least five arrested as fuel protests disrupt Cork city centre

"At least five people were arrested in Cork city during fuel price protests, as demonstrators including farmers and transport workers brought tractors and heavy goods vehicles into the city centre. The footage shows arrests being made while police can be seen pushing protesters during the rally, as demonstrators link arms and face off with officers. Tractors and trucks are seen moving through the city centre while crowds chant, wave Irish flags and hold signs including 'No war, but class war.' "These taxes on diesel are the predominant problem," said Frank O’Connell, one of the protesters. "That's the wrong way to tax people." Another protester, truck driver Darragh Murray said the protest reflected wider frustration. "They're not just doing it for themselves. They're not just doing it for trucks and I am a truck driver myself. We all feel the pain, pricey diesel, children have to go to school, hospital ambulances have to get out… It's about time the Irish get out and make a stand," he said. The protest in Cork forms part of a broader wave of demonstrations across Ireland over fuel costs and the rising cost of living. The Irish government has since announced a 500 million euro package to support those 'most impacted' by the fuel crisis. Diesel prices have risen by more than 20 per cent in recent weeks, following disruptions linked to the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route."
