'Chavez, you did not plough the sea!' - Thousands of Venezuelans mark National Dignity Day in Caracas

"Thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets in Caracas on Monday to commemorate 'Dignity Day', the 'Day of the Bolivarian Militia', and the 24th anniversary of Hugo Chavez’s return to power after he was temporarily overthrown in a coup on 11 April 2002. In the footage, demonstrators can be seen holding photographs of Hugo Chavez and Venezuelan flags, in an atmosphere of celebration and solidarity. "We are here to celebrate our homeland, and the 24 years of struggle of my commander Hugo Chavez Frias, who gave us this freedom," said Janet Coromoto, a member of the Bolivarian Militia. The march was called by the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) and set off from various points across Caracas, with a final destination at the steps of 'El Calvario', inside Ezequiel Zamora Park, and included the participation of workers and social movements. "Today we once again take to the streets to tell, together with the Bolivarian Militia, the Venezuelan people and the whole world, that here there is plenty of courage and determination," said Manuel Echenique, a Venezuelan citizen attending the demonstration. The event pays tribute to the popular resistance that more than two decades ago took to the streets to restore Commander Hugo Chavez after his 48-hour removal by an opposition civic-military alliance, an event that reshaped the country’s direction. "24 years since the vindication of the Venezuelan people, it is a source of pride to be Venezuelan, and we show the whole world that homeland is Venezuela," said Carlos Castillo, a Venezuelan citizen. Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Yvan Gil recalled on social media that the date symbolises the civic-military unity that remains a central pillar of current political strategy."
