Splashes of joy! Cambodia’s Battambang bursts into celebration for Khmer New Year

"Gold silk, white jasmine, and brilliant red festive scarves flooded the streets of Battambang as Cambodia celebrates Chaul Chnam Thmey, the three-day New Year festival marking the end of the harvest season. Young Cambodians transformed the streets of Battambang into a vibrant splash party, gathering to mark what is one of the country’s biggest festivals. In the footage, young boys and girls can be seen playing in foam, applying baby powder, and soaking passersby with water. Many can also be seen dancing to loud music. “I want people from other provinces to visit Battambang because this area is fun,” said local Linda. “We play with water for fun, yet our minds are always with the soldiers at the front line. The war has destroyed people’s property,” explained another local. Locally known as 'Chaul Chnam Thmei' or 'Moha Sangkran', Cambodia’s New Year holiday falls in the fifth month of the Cambodian lunar calendar, when peasants were relieved of their farm work after the dry-season rice harvest. The year 2026 is designated as the Year of the Fire Horse, with the festival typically lasting for three days, from April 14-16. During the three-day festival, people engage in home cleaning, traditional games, temple visits, and water-splashing celebrations, captivating locals and tourists alike."
