'We lost everything' - At least 12 houses damaged after major hydraulic system failure wreaks havoc in Mexico City

"Damaged houses were left in the wake of an uncontrolled water release early on Tuesday in the Alvaro Obregon borough of central Mexico City. Footage shows broken appliances, damaged furniture and structural damage inside the house of resident Claudia Ramirez, who was among those affected by the flooding. "It was like a river, it was completely a river of water. [...] The gate burst open, and it took six adults trying to force it shut, but we simply could not do it. The pressure was too strong, and the situation kept getting worse," Claudia recalled. Ramirez said the water started to pour in gradually in the early hours of the morning, before the flow suddenly intensified and reached its most critical point. She said 'everything was lost' in the flood and urged authorities to step in quickly, with structural damage now threatening the safety of the home. "We have lost everything, honestly. [...] One of the walls of the house is on the verge of collapsing due to the force of the water, and a sinkhole has opened up outside. We need a great deal of help," she said. Civil Protection personnel inspected the site and advised a preventive evacuation of the home because of the structural damage. Mexico City Risk Management Secretary Miriam Urzua told local media that the incident was caused by a surge of water and a failure in the inlet and outlet gate at the top of the slope, as well as in the drainage system, which accelerated the flow towards nearby homes."
