'Complicit in war crimes!' - Paris police clear sit-in as students rally against 'Yadan law', academic ties with Israel

"Students staged a sit-in outside two major universities in Paris on Tuesday against the proposed ‘Yadan law’, which the government says aims to combat ‘new forms of antisemitism’. with many viewing it as an attempt to curb pro-Palestinian voices. Footage shows a large police contingent arriving at Sorbonne University and Sciences Po University to remove the protesters. Students can be seen singing Bella Ciao, a famous Italian protest song. Student committees supporting Palestine and several socialist organisations announced the occupation of Sorbonne University’s premises on Tuesday. The sit-in at Sorbonne University began around midday, attracting 60 to 100 people in front of the entrance on Rue de la Sorbonne. The protest was part of a series of pro-Palestine actions that have been ongoing for over two years, with students denouncing partnerships with Israeli universities and the Yadan law, which they describe as an attempt to censor academic freedom. “We have academic partnerships with Israeli scientific institutions and faculties that are participating in the genocide,” claimed student Baptiste. "The national police entered the ‘barge’ hall armed with batons and guns, dragged us out, and evicted us,” he added. Each student was fined €400 for the unauthorised demonstration. The French government says the legislation will be voted on Thursday and Friday, with human rights activists calling the law ‘vague’ and an attack on freedom of expression."
