'Critical phase for the Gulf region' - GCC chief blames Iran for Middle East escalation, calls Strait of Hormuz blockade 'unacceptable'

"Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary General HE Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi slammed Iran's actions in the Middle East during his address in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday. "The Gulf region is going through a critical phase where ongoing Iranian escalation and aggression pose a direct threat to regional and international security and stability and a serious challenge to international law and United Nations Security Council resolutions," Albudaiwi said. "This is reflected in Iran's attacks on GCC member states, despite the GCC states clearly providing assurances that they would not allow any military operations to be launched from their territory against Iran," he continued. While thanking the EU for condemning Iran's actions, he also addressed the issue of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which he said has disrupted global agriculture, potentially leading to serious future consequences for global markets. He stressed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain an open and secure international waterway, free from threats or restrictions. "Any attempt to impose a new reality by force or to use it as a political and economic pressure tool is unacceptable," he added. The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran responded with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with the conflict now halted by a fragile 14-day ceasefire brokered by Pakistan, which is supposed to last until April 21."
