BOC Intelligence Group chief resigns

THE chief of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Intelligence Group has resigned from his post. Customs Deputy Commissioner Romeo Allan Rosales confirmed on Wednesday an earlier announcement by Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno that he accepted the resignation of the intelligence chief. “Yes, I resigned,” Rosales told The Manila Times, but refused to elaborate on his reason for resigning, which, according to Nepomuceno, as stated in Rosales’ resignation letter, was due to the intelligence chief’s failure to arrest individuals who should have been arrested. “He (Rosales) said there were individuals who should have been apprehended but were not,” the customs chief said. “It wasn’t detailed in his letter. But based on his assessment, there were smuggled items that he was not able to act on, which led to his resignation,” added Nepomuceno. Rosales, a seasoned customs official who rose from the ranks, was one of the six customs deputy commissioners appointed last year, after Nepomuceno took over the helm of the BOC from former commissioner Bienvenido Rubio. According to Nepomuceno, he recommended his classmate from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), whom he described as “very qualified,” as Rosales’ replacement. Pending approval of his recommendation, Nepomuceno said he will take over the post Rosales vacated as de facto officer-in-charge of the Intelligence Group. “In the meantime, I am acting as the de facto officer-in-charge of the Intelligence Group. So for now, I am directly issuing instructions to our intelligence operatives,” he said.
