'Chains of corruption must be broken' - Pope Leo XIV calls for peace, interfaith dialogue as Pres Biya hails 'historic visit'

"Pope Leo XIV called on Cameroon’s leaders to root out corruption and promote peace and justice, as President Paul Biya welcomed the pontiff in Yaounde on Wednesday for what he described as a 'historic visit'. "The chains of corruption that disfigure authority by emptying it of its credibility must be broken," the Pope said, urging authorities to act with integrity and uphold human rights. Addressing officials in Yaounde, he stressed the need for public institutions to serve as a 'bridge' rather than a source of division, calling for dialogue, respect, and protection for the most vulnerable. "An authentic peace is born when everyone feels protected, heard and respected, when the law is a rampart against the arbitrary will of the richest and the strongest," he added. Hailing the rich culture of the African nation, he urged leaders to overcome differences and move toward a future of stability and shared prosperity. "The common commitment in favour of dialogue, justice and integral development must transform the wounds of the past into sources of renewal," he said. The pontiff urged leaders to focus on human development and invest in youth, describing it as a 'strategic choice for peace.' President Biya said the visit came at a time of growing global crises and conflict, adding that the Pope’s message of peace offered hope to a troubled world. "It is with immense joy that I welcome you on the occasion of this historic visit," Biya said, praising Cameroon’s tradition of religious tolerance and longstanding ties with the Catholic Church. Leo XIV's first apostolic visit to Africa runs from April 13 to 23, kicking off with his arrival in Algeria. He is also scheduled to visit Angola and Equatorial Guinea, with the Cameroon leg set for April 15 to 18."
