IMF projects 0.5pc fall in govt’s primary balance

ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected a decline of 0.5 percent in the government’s primary balance for the next fiscal year, and projected it at 2 percent against 2.5 percent in 2026 and 2.4 percent in 2025. According to the IMF report “Fiscal Monitor, fiscal policy under pressure: higher debt, rising risks,” a decline of 2.1 percent in Pakistan’s government net debt is projected, decreasing from 66.5 percent of GDP in 2025 to 64.4 percent in 2026 and 62.1 percent in fiscal year 2027. The gross debt for the Pakistani government is projected to decrease from 72.8 percent of GDP in 2025 to 70.1 percent in 2026.
