The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has appreciated Pakistan’s continued progress on economic reforms. This was conveyed by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva during her meeting with Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb on the sidelines of the IMF–World Bank Spring Meetings 2026. Georgieva noted that Pakistan’s strong implementation of its reform programme had “contributed to maintaining macroeconomic stability and building investor confidence”. The IMF director said that sound economic policies, along with the continuation of deeper structural reforms, would be critical for sustaining economic growth and improving the welfare of the people of Pakistan. Finance minister participates in the launch of Borrowers’ Platform Meanwhile, Aurangzeb also participated in the launch of the Borrowers’ Platform, held on the sidelines of the World Bank–IMF Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C. “The Finance Minister underscored that a large number of developing countries remain in acute debt distress, facing elevated borrowing costs and tightening global financial conditions that are constraining their ability to invest in growth and sustainable development,” the Finance Ministry said. The minister noted that while domestic reforms remained essential and were being actively pursued, “systemic constraints within the global financial architecture continue to limit the policy space available to borrowing nations”. He highlighted that the Borrowers’ Platform addressed a long-standing gap, as borrowing countries have lacked a dedicated forum to share experiences, identify emerging risks, and bring coherence to their collective perspectives. “He clarified that the Platform is not intended as a negotiating bloc, but rather as a voluntary, Member State-led initiative focused on peer learning, experience-sharing, and amplifying the voice of borrowing countries in the global financial discourse.” Aurangzeb meets UN Secretary-General Aurangzeb also met Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres today. He appreciated the participation of the UN Secretary-General in the launch event and thanked him for his support in the establishment of this important platform. The two sides also discussed the global economic implications of the ongoing situation in the Middle East, particularly its impact on food and energy security in developing countries. “The UN Secretary-General lauded Pakistan’s role in facilitating peace and stability in the region and beyond, and expressed confidence in its continued constructive engagement on the global stage,” as per a statement.
