"Farmers and local officials gathered in the Knoblauchsland region near Furth-Kronach on Wednesday for the traditional asparagus harvest opening ceremony, marking the beginning of one of Germany’s key seasonal agricultural periods. While the fields were filled with fresh asparagus and ceremonial activity, producers warned that rising production costs are casting a shadow over the season. "You have to differentiate, because when it comes to energy prices, we are of course talking about diesel prices, which affect us the most at the moment," said farmer and association chairman Christian Hofmann. "These are the same prices as at the petrol station — what we have to pay for it," he added. He added that diesel costs currently average between €1.60 and €1.71 per litre, describing fuel as the most immediate pressure on farm operations. Although gas prices remain stable for some producers due to long-term contracts, Hofmann said fertiliser costs have surged by around 50%, forcing farms to absorb part of the increases rather than pass them fully onto consumers. "Passing these additional costs on to customers is partly difficult," he continued. "Consumers are very price-sensitive. As a result, businesses are having to absorb part of the costs through their margins." He warned that while farms are not in immediate crisis, continued pressure could make the situation increasingly difficult. Despite the financial strain, producers said they remain committed to maintaining production levels, though they warned that higher costs may eventually be passed on to consumers through higher food prices. The uncertainty comes amid widespread disruption to global energy markets following escalating tensions in the Middle East, including instability in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for roughly a fifth of the world’s oil shipments."
