'End this inhumane schedule!' - Workers call for an end to the 6-day work week in Sao Paulo protest

"Hundreds of Brazilian workers took to the streets of Sao Paulo on Wednesday to demand an end to the six-day work week, calling for two consecutive days of rest without a reduction in their salaries. The footage shows protesters holding flags of the Superior Labour Court while chanting slogans calling for a shorter working day. The protest brought together various social movements, unions and collectives that denounced the impact of the labour model on workers' quality of life and health. They argued that the mobilisation aims to achieve structural change in the organisation of work in the country, while maintaining salaries and expanding free time. "[We are] against the 6x1 system, to end this inhumane work schedule, it is a scheme that condemns our youth," said Marina, one of the protesters. Participants say the current work schedule has become especially widespread in sectors such as commerce, services and digital platforms, stating that the workload limits access to leisure, education and family life. "People need to have a life beyond work. The end of 6x1 means more time for leisure, more time for culture, for free time," argued Talles, another protester. Brazilian president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, sent a bill to Congress on Tuesday proposing to eliminate the six-day-on, one-day-off rota and reduce the weekly working hours from 44 to 40 without reducing salaries. On Wednesday, the Brazilian Congress began analysing a Proposed Constitutional Amendment to establish two consecutive days of rest. In addition to reducing the working week, the demands included rights for digital platform workers, combating femicide and strengthening formal employment rights."
