'Nothing is like it used to be' – Gaza photographer strives to reclaim passion after losing leg in war

"Palestinian photographer Kifah Abd Al-Fakhouri, based in the Gaza Strip, is striving to rebuild her career and return to her passion for photography after losing a leg during the war — a life-altering ordeal that reshaped her future.   Footage filmed on Thursday shows Kifah taking photos and moving around inside her tent.   Kifah described the experience as "heartbreaking and unbearably painful," during which she lost her leg as well as several of her friends.   "My once sky-high ambitions have vanished," she said. "Before my injury, I was very active. I used to move quickly; now, everything is much harder — walking, moving around, and even holding my camera."   Despite the challenges, she expressed determination to return to her work. "I am striving to regain my laughter and smile, and to show the world my true character once again," she said.   Kifah also issued a humanitarian appeal for medical support to travel abroad and receive a prosthetic limb. "I have received a medical referral, and my greatest wish is to travel so that I can walk again and obtain a prosthetic limb," she added.   The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas launched an attack on Israel, killing more than 1,100 people and taking over 200 hostages. Israel responded with a large-scale military campaign, resulting in 72,344 Palestinian deaths and 172,242 injuries, according to available figures.   Following Israel's announcement of the second phase of Operation Gideon Chariots 2, aimed at rescuing hostages and expelling Hamas from Gaza, U.S. President Donald Trump presented a 20-point “Peace Council” plan, which was accepted by both Hamas and Israel.   The plan was widely welcomed by several Arab and international countries as a preliminary framework for ending the conflict in the Gaza Strip."
