Heading home - Traffic jam as families return to southern Lebanon following 10-day ceasefire

"Hundreds of Lebanese families drove back to their homes in southern Lebanon on Friday after a 10-day ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel came into effect. Vehicles loaded with luggage were seen moving along the highway near the Awali checkpoint, while Lebanese soldiers managed the heavy traffic flow. The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into force at exactly 12:00 am local time on Friday (9:00 pm GMT on Thursday). US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social: "I had excellent conversations with highly respected President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon and Prime Minister Netanyahu. The two leaders agreed to a formal 10-day ceasefire." The Lebanese presidency stated that Aoun received a call from Trump, during which he expressed gratitude for efforts to secure a ceasefire in Lebanon and achieve lasting peace and stability as a step toward a broader regional peace process. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video statement: "We have an opportunity to reach a historic peace agreement with Lebanon. President Trump intends to invite both the President of Lebanon and myself in an effort to move this agreement forward." Intensified clashes between Israel and Hezbollah since March 2 have forced more than one million people to flee, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Displacement has spread from the south and the Bekaa Valley to Beirut and northern regions, with numbers continuing to rise. Tensions escalated sharply after the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28. Tehran subsequently announced retaliatory strikes on Israel and US assets across the region. The conflict widened further after Hezbollah launched strikes on Israel, saying they were in retaliation for Khamenei’s assassination and Israeli operations in Lebanon."
