MANILA, Philippines - Speaker Faustino Dy 3rd has welcomed the arrest of former Ako Bicol Partylist Rep. Elizaldy Co in Prague, Czech Republic, calling it a "significant step toward accountability and justice for the Filipino people," President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the arrest of Co on Thursday night. “The arrest of Mr. Zaldy Co is an important step forward for justice and the rule of law. It sends a clear message that those who attempt to evade the law will be held to account.” Dy said in a statement on Friday. Dy noted that Marcos's statement reflects the administration’s commitment to pursue justice in the wake of allegations of corruption in the implementation of government flood control projects. “It is clear in his SONA [State of the Nation Address] that the president does not want an inch of corruption in his leadership. That accountability must apply to everyone, especially those entrusted with public funds,” Dy said. Other lawmakers also welcomed the arrest of Co. "With the arrest of Zaldy Co, the Philippine government should waste no time in fast-tracking his deportation. He really needs to face the cases against him, bring his allegations to the proper forum, and share everything he knows in the investigations—including any evidence he has about the questionable flood control projects." Mamamayang Liberal Partylist Rep. Leila de Lima said. "[Co's] return must not be reduced to a media spectacle or a convenient ending; it must be the beginning of a full public reckoning over the flood control scam and the broader system of corruption in public works and budgeting," said the Makabayan bloc, composed of ACT Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio, Gabriela Rep. Sarah Jane Elago, and Kabataan Rep. Renee Co.
