"Colombian President Gustavo Petro warned that ‘genocides return’ to the world, accusing the US and of racially-motivated ethnic cleansing and violence, in a speech to a summit on democracy in Barcelona. The leader referred to the return of a ‘global 1933’, the scale of the killings in Gaza, as well as military aggression against Iran, Lebanon, Syria and Venezuela. "That is why I speak of the global 1933, not to mention more issues, because genocides return," he said, noting the numbers killed in Palestine. "Now also with lies countries are invaded or attacked like Iran, or like Venezuela, or like Lebanon at this moment, or like Syria, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. And Cuba is threatened and Colombia as well." Petro said that practices seen in Europe in 1933 are now being ‘revived’, pointing to what he said is an agenda against migrants by US President Donald Trump. "Just the programmes against Latin American peoples in the United States, just because they consider they have no right to live there and they take them out like dogs and send them to concentration camps that exist today," he said. “In the background of that attitude they consider, and not only rulers but a very important part of society, that not having white skin makes them less.” Petro also described the situation in Argentina as a ‘debacle’, while noting that “most of Latin America lives under progressive governments." Petro arrived Thursday in Barcelona, Spain, to participate in the Summit in Defence of Democracy, an international event in which leaders such as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Uruguayan leader Yamandu Orsi and Spain’s Pedro Sanchez are participating.
