"Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed on Friday that ongoing negotiations with Israel are focused on 'ending the aggression' against his country and establishing enduring agreements to protect the nation’s rights and sovereignty. These talks, he emphasised, are 'not a sign of weakness', but rather 'a decision emerged from the strength of belief in our legitimate rights'. In a televised address during the first day of a temporary ceasefire with Israel, Aoun has underscored that the truce was 'the result of collective efforts'. He also commended the 'resilience' of the Lebanese people. The Lebanese president described the current phase as a transition from a ceasefire to a broader political path. "Now, we stand at the threshold of a new phase, shifting from ceasefire into efforts of sealing enduring agreements that safeguard our people’s rights, the unity of our land, and the sovereignty of our nation," he illustrated. Aoun also reiterated that the ongoing negotiations do not imply any concession, saying, "These negotiations are not a sign of weakness, nor retreat, nor concession, but rather a decision emerged from the strength of belief in our legitimate rights by all means." Highlighting the central objective of the ongoing efforts, the Lebanese leader said it is "to halt Israeli aggression on our territory and people, secure an Israeli withdrawal, restore Lebanese authority over its entire territory using its internal capabilities solely, and ensure the safe return of prisoners and displaced citizens to their homes in peace and dignity."
