'All conditions are put in place' - Angolan officials step up security ahead of the Pontiff's visit to Luanda

"The Angolan authorities have implemented enhanced security measures ahead of Pope Leo XIV's visit to the country. They have put in place logistics and crowd management plans to ensure the safety of large crowds during the religious events. Footage shows President Joao Lourenco, along with cabinet ministers, holding final preparatory meetings. "All the conditions have been put in place thanks to the various stakeholders involved in this great mission," said Minister of State for Social Affairs Maria do Rosario Braganca. Governor Martins Jacob of the Icolo Bengo Province said that the province has a long tradition of welcoming large numbers of pilgrims every year and that the town of Muxima has prepared special access roads to make it easier for large convoys to arrive. "An infrastructure has been set up to accommodate more than 300,000 faithful. This means that any citizen wishing to attend the rosary prayer that the Pope will lead in Muxima has the essential conditions in place," he said. Footage also shows posters welcoming the pontiff's arrival as security measures are deployed with several police vehicles monitoring the situation outside churches throughout the capital. "It is, therefore, a great blessing that the Pope chooses Africa, and we, as young people in our context, can only rejoice. We must all take part. And moreover, it is good to have the Church, and it is something truly commendable," added a Catholic devotee, Edvandro Oliveira. The Pope arrives in Luanda on Saturday as part of his 11-day Africa tour, visiting the capital, Luanda, and the towns of Muxima and Saurimo. Key activities reportedly include a welcoming ceremony at the airport, a presidential meeting, and promoting peace dialogue in the region. A historic 10-day apostolic journey which began in Algeria on April 13 is due to continue in Angola and Equatorial Guinea through April 23."
