'US President does not own the G20!' - Brazil's Lula says Trump has 'no right' to exclude South Africa

"Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he would 'fight' to keep South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in the G20, during his speech at Barcelona defence summit on Saturday "The American president does not have the right to remove you from the G20, because he does not own the G20," Lula said, addressing President Cyril Ramaphosa. It comes after United States President Donald Trump said South Africa would not be invited to the 2026 summit in the US over 'conduct and protocol' concerns during G20-related processes. The Brazilian leader slammed what he described as 'silence' on global conflicts, arguing that no country has the right to impose rules on others or make decisions about war or intervention without international consultation. "We cannot wake up every morning and go to sleep every night with the Twitter of a president of the republic threatening the world, making war," Lula exclaimed. He accused United Nations Member States of making decisions without consulting the international body, and urged nations to speak out or risk 'nothing changing.' "To whom did Trump ask to invade Iran? To no one. To whom did Israel ask to invade the Gaza Strip as it did? To no one. To whom did they ask to invade Venezuela? To no one. In other words, they are unilateral decisions that do not respect the forum in which these people participate," Lula said. "This lack of respect for the UN charters, this lack of respect for harmony between countries and nations, is very dangerous in the world we are living in," he asserted. The G20 is a forum made up of 19 countries plus the European Union and African Union, bringing together major economies including the US, China, India, Brazil and South Africa. Membership is not controlled by any single country and cannot be changed unilaterally. South Africa has been a full member of the G20 since its creation in 1999, representing Africa as one of the key emerging economies in global discussions. There has been no formal process or mechanism for excluding South Africa from the G20 at the time of publication. The fourth edition of the IV Meeting in Defence of Democracy is being held alongside the first-ever Global Progressive Mobilisation (GPM) in Barcelona, bringing together around 3,000 participants and multiple world leaders in a joint two-part summit."
