'We're fighting a battle in Europe on this' - Meloni urges joint action to secure Hormuz strait as vessels report attacks

"Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday urged countries to work together to ensure maritime security and the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz following the US-Iran war. "It is the precise task of politics and institutions to stand alongside those who contribute every day to making Italy great," she explained. "I do not need to remind you of extreme importance [...] in the world with a domino effect that starts from energy, oil, and gas, all the way through to fertilisers," she added, noting that the changes risk a 'food crisis'. She pointed to the 'complex' and ever-changing geopolitical situation around the world, adding that 'instability is slowly becoming our normality.' "We are at work every minute on the stabilisation of quadrants that have by now multiplied [...] precisely talking about the need to guarantee freedom of navigation," she stated. Meloni referred to her recent international visits to Algeria and Gulf countries to ensure an ongoing supply of fundamental energy resources to Italy. She added that Italy moved early to tackle high energy costs with a €5 billion plan and is now pushing the European Union to fix rules that are unintentionally driving prices up, even for cleaner energy. Italy was among the countries that attended France- and UK-led talks on the 'Maritime Freedom of Navigation Initiative' in Paris on Friday, which foresees a multinational naval mission in the Strait of Hormuz. Meloni's remarks came after Iran said it had closed the strait again and ships were reportedly attacked. The shipping channel was briefly reopened on Friday, and ships had started to transit through. Tehran says the reaction is over the continuing US blockade on Iranian ports, calling it a 'breach of the ceasefire'."
